Community Development Director

The Town of Corte Madera, California is seeking a Community Development Director to lead its economic development, building and planning initiatives. The Community Development Director will have an opportunity to select new staff members and build out the team in this Town Department. This is an excellent opportunity to join a small, but growing and very active team of dedicated employees who provide great service to the community. Under direction of the Town Manager, the Community Development Director plans, organizes, administers, reviews, and evaluates all the functions of the Department of Community Development to serve the Town of Corte Madera. Salary Range: $166,296 - $202,155 Annually

Ideal Candidate:

  • Masters Degree in City or Urban Planning or related Field

  • American Institute of Certified Planners Certification

  • Team player focused on working collaboratively with and supporting the work of the Town’s management team and community development department staff; ability to perform a wide variety of technical and managerial tasks as needed in support of overall Town and team goals and mission

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively explain complex topics and information to diverse audiences

  • Motivated by complex planning and development challenges such as housing affordability, sea level rise, economic development, and suburban design issues

  • Motivated to find creative local solutions through community engagement, technical analysis, and thoughtfully developed policies and programs

  • Understanding of principles of urban design and/or landscape design (and ability to create explanatory graphics)

Required Skills / Experience / Education

Experience: • At least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in planning or community development in a public sector setting including two years of experience in a management/supervisory role. Training: • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with major coursework in community development, urban planning, civil engineering, business or public administration or a related field. Master’s degree strongly desired. Certifications and Licenses: • Possess a valid California Driver’s License at the time of appointment and maintain for the duration of employment with the Town of Corte Madera • AICP Certification desired
